Kanagawa Maru was a cargo ship of NYK Line that constructed by David & William Henderson and Co in England in 1896. It was the first 6 thousands ton class cargo belong to the company.
NYK Line opened the Bombay route as early as 1893 for trade of Indian cotton. NYK Line, which acquired the major routes for trade, built Kanagawa Maru in 1896, and was on the European routes, Yokohama, Kobe, Moji, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Penang, Colombo, Suez, Portside, Marseille, London, Antwerp, Middlesbrough.
When the war between Japan and Russia began at 1904, Kanagawa Maru was changed to sail to Seattle route. On this process, Kanagawa Maru entered Shimizu Port to load green tea and departed for Seattle, on May 13, 1906.
After that, Kanagawa Maru departed to Santos port in Brazil with 1,416 immigrants from Kobe Port in 1912, It led to the route known as the South American east coast line. In 1917, Kanagawa Maru was placed on the east coast line of South America via Singapore, Cape Town and Santos, which was newly established.
Kanagawa Maru was in service until 1933.
