On the waterfront, manual cargo handling was carried out by stevedores known as paisuke. Balancing loads fore and aft on a shoulder pole (tenbin-bō), they shuttled along narrow gangplanks laid between shore and vessel to load and discharge goods by hand.
The “black stones” shown here are coal and coke. In Shizuoka, these fuels were used to dry and finish fresh tea leaves, creating substantial demand that later contributed to the development of a gasoline industry in Shimizu.
