Sunpu (current Shizuoka city area) has been known for its lacquerware production since the Edo period (1603–1868), which was even exported through Dejima in Nagasaki.

This sagejū (portable tiered box) was used to carry sweets for outings such as cherry blossom viewing.

It includes tiered boxes and small plates decorated with aogai (sliced abalone shells) inlay and suki-urushi (transparent lacquer).
