One source that vividly documents commerce and daily life in Shimizu is the daifukuchō. A daifukuchō consists of completed account books—such as a shop’s general ledger and cashbook—bound together and tied with cord into rounded, bulging bundles. Deliberately stacked where visitors could see them, these bundles functioned as a visible assurance of prosperity and creditworthiness. Arrayed on the counter, the daifukuchō made not only figures but also a merchant house’s reputation and pride plainly legible.
